Baptisms

Children

We're delighted you're thinking of baptism for your child. Your child is precious to you and precious to God.

In baptism, you as parents are: thanking God for his gift of life, deciding to start your child on the journey of faith and asking for the Church's support. For your child, baptism marks the start of a journey of faith, turning towards Christ and becoming a member of the local and worldwide Christian family. Baptism is a 'sacrament': a visible sign of God's love.

Adults

Teenagers and adults may also be baptised. This is sometimes included within a celebration of confirmation by the Bishop.

You can only be baptised once, but there are ways of renewing your Christian commitment and baptismal vows publicly as an adult. What matters is that those concerned sincerely desire to follow Christ and have a good appreciation of what they are doing. Therefore, for young people and adults the normal practice is for them to attend a series of nurture classes prior to Baptism or Confirmation.
